Up to 100% training grant for new hires

Fishing and wildlife management in Northern Ontario generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue annually. With $6.5 billion spent in Ontario, fishing, hunting and related industries contribute $4.7 billion to Ontario’s economy.

Ontario’s fishing and wildlife resource sector needs properly trained and certified fishing ambassadors to share their passion for fishing, the outdoors and to create memorable experiences for enthusiasts.

Hard ice water fishing made easy

In this 10-day program, students enjoy a mix of in-class and on-the-job training based on the nationally recognized Emerit Freshwater Fishing Guide certification.

Course materials cover:

  • Outdoor Safety & Survival Skills
  • Snow Machines & ATVs
  • Fundamentals of Heritage Interpretation
  • Trip Preparation
  • Conducting & Concluding The Trip

  • Wilderness First Aid/CPR

Freshwater fishing guide & ambassador

As inaugural graduates of the Freshwater Fishing Guide Program, Brent, Avalonne and Brendan are already creating unique experiences for their guests. From sharing their Ojibwe way of life to applying their deep knowledge of the land and their experience of the outdoors, they have become cultural ambassadors in their region and are helping visitors connect with and respect nature.

COJG can offset up to 100% of an employee’s eligible training costs up to $15,000 maximum per trainee.

The Northern Ontario Fishing Program is funded by The Canada-Ontario Jobs Grant (COJG). It is a shared investment between employers and the provincial and federal governments designed to support economic activity, career mobility and professional development.
